Why We Started DNX Scientific: A Specialist Approach to Immunology Diagnostics

DNX Scientific was founded with a clear purpose: to build stronger connections between specialist diagnostic manufacturers and UK immunology laboratories and healthcare providers.

Immunology is a relatively niche area of diagnostics. The products are often highly specialised, workflows can vary considerably between laboratories, and finding the right solution isn’t always straightforward.

Sometimes the challenge is finding a better way to perform an existing test. Sometimes it’s improving a laboratory workflow. And sometimes it’s simply sourcing a specialist product, reagent or quality control material that isn’t readily available.

We saw an opportunity to do things a little differently.

Experience from both sides

The thinking behind DNX Scientific has developed through experience on both sides of the diagnostics industry.

My own career in diagnostics began in sample reception in a laboratory in Australia. After relocating to the UK, I continued my career within both private and NHS laboratories, progressing into senior laboratory roles before eventually moving into the commercial diagnostics industry.

That experience gave me the opportunity to understand diagnostics from both perspectives - from the day-to-day realities of working within a laboratory to the challenges involved in bringing diagnostic products to market and supporting them effectively.

It was during my commercial career that laboratory workflow analysis became a particular area of interest. Rather than looking at an analyser or assay in isolation, this meant looking at the complete testing process: where time was being spent, where bottlenecks occurred, which processes were manual and where changes in technology, automation or working practices could make a meaningful difference.

Working commercially also provided a different perspective on the relationship between manufacturers and laboratories.

Manufacturers can develop excellent technologies, but understanding where those technologies genuinely fit within a UK laboratory - and what laboratories actually need - requires more than simply presenting a product.

That combination of laboratory and commercial experience helped shape the approach we wanted to take with DNX Scientific.

Why immunology?

Immunology isn’t simply an area DNX Scientific has chosen to focus on. It’s where much of our knowledge and experience has been built.

Years spent working within immunology have given us first-hand experience of the field, from the practical challenges faced by laboratories to the technologies, workflows and specialist products that support them.

That experience is central to the way we want DNX Scientific to work. Immunology is a niche and technically specialised area of diagnostics, and we believe the products we represent should be supported by people who understand both the science behind them and the environment in which they are used.

Laboratories and healthcare providers can have highly specific requirements. Not every challenge requires a major new analyser or a complete change in testing methodology. The need might be a particular reagent or control, greater standardisation or automation, or simply a better way of doing something within the existing workflow.

Our role is to listen to those requirements and use our knowledge of the immunology market to help identify appropriate solutions.

Working with specialist manufacturers

Who we choose to work with is an important part of our approach.

We are particularly interested in manufacturers that are specialists in their field - companies with genuine expertise in the technologies they develop and a commitment to continually improving them.

Just as importantly, we value manufacturers that listen to their customers.

The people using diagnostic products every day are often best placed to identify where improvements could be made. We want to work with manufacturers that take this feedback seriously and use it to refine their products, workflows and future developments.

Our aim isn’t to create the largest possible product catalogue. We would rather develop a focused portfolio of specialist immunology solutions that we understand, believe in and can properly support.

Starting with the problem, not the product

One of the principles behind DNX Scientific is that the conversation shouldn’t always begin with:

“What can we sell?”

It should begin with:

“What does the laboratory or healthcare provider need?”

The answer might be a new diagnostic technology, automation that reduces manual processes, an opportunity to improve an existing workflow, or simply a specialist QC material or reagent that has been difficult to source.

By understanding the requirement first, we can look for solutions that genuinely address the problem rather than trying to make a particular product fit.

Supporting manufacturers entering the UK

The same approach applies when we work with diagnostic manufacturers.

Having an innovative product doesn’t automatically mean it will succeed in a new market. Manufacturers need to understand how the UK market operates, where their technology genuinely fits and which laboratories or healthcare providers are most likely to benefit from it.

DNX Scientific can support manufacturers with UK market entry, commercial strategy, laboratory engagement, product evaluations, workflow analysis and ongoing commercial representation.

Rather than simply introducing a product and moving on, our aim is to help manufacturers establish meaningful relationships within the UK and develop their presence over the longer term.

What we want DNX Scientific to become

DNX Scientific is at the beginning of its own journey, but the experience and thinking behind the business have developed over many years.

We want to build a company known for its knowledge of immunology, for listening to laboratories and healthcare providers, and for representing specialist manufacturers whose technologies we genuinely believe can add value.

For manufacturers, we want to provide the market knowledge, relationships and commercial support needed to establish and grow successfully in the UK.

For laboratories and healthcare providers, we want DNX Scientific to be somewhere they can turn not only when they are looking for a particular product, but when they have a problem and aren’t yet sure what the solution might be.

Ultimately, that is why we started DNX Scientific:

to connect specialist diagnostic innovation with the UK immunology laboratories and healthcare providers that can put it to use.
